How To Make Any Space Feel Like Home

They say home is where the heart is but for the frequent traveller, home is only a stopover, not the destination. If you’re anything like us and homesickness creeps up on you from time to time, you’ll love these simple and effective remedies that’ll keep homesickness at bay.

Photos

It doesn’t matter if you’ve moved three suburbs away or you're sitting at a quaint café in Tuscany a thousand miles away from your flat in Byron, nothing makes our hearts flutter more than flicking through pictures on our phone and seeing the faces and places we love. So, while you’re home, snap your little heart out so you can take reminders of your loved ones with you as you travel. Don’t get too caught up in the memories and forget to immerse yourself in the culture you’re in, though!

Trinkets

There’s nothing quite like stepping into your house and seeing your silver necklaces draped over a bed post and your much-loved cowboy boots tucked away in a corner. You can’t take the doorframes or wallpaper with you when you move but you can take the little gems scattered around the space. We recommend packing up your favourite pieces of art, souvenirs given to you by your pals, fridge magnets and other small mementos.

Fragrances

Home smells like different things to different people. To me, home smells like flowers in bloom and rooibos tea. To another, home might smell like fresh pastries coated in butter or the saltiness of the sea. As much as we’d love to capture the smell of home in a bottle and spritz it in our new space when we long to be there, we can’t. We can, however, find things that almost capture the smell and if we spray the fragrance or light the candle at the right time and close our eyes for a moment, no matter how brief, we feel like we’re back.
