Famous Syrian poet once wrote, “In the summer, I stretch out on the shore and think of you. Had I told the sea what I felt for you, it would have left its shores, its shells, its fish, and followed me." For many, the best thing about travelling is the people they meet and some people make such an impression on us that we’re willing to change our plans and make new ones with them. Marie Fe and Jake Snow have a love story that sounds like something out of our dizziest daydreams and we caught up with the lovers to talk about all things travel.

What kind of travellers are you?

We are experience and self improving travellers. From the moment we met we realised the importance of travel and the beautiful miracles that can come from it. Our relationship wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for travel so we feel like we owe it to ourselves to continue travelling and see what other amazing opportunities and experiences the world can provide. When you get home from a trip around the world worth thousands of dollars, you haven't just paid for a bunch of memories,
you've paid for an improved version of yourself thats grown in so many different ways.
Travelling has helped both of us become the people we are today, we have learnt, grown, and experienced so much! We are aware of this personal growth, now we actively chase it. Thats why we travel.

Do you have a favourite destination? Why?

Its so hard to pick a favourite place, most of the time its the people you meet and the special moments in that place that make it so special. For us a really special place is the Philippines. We spent 8 weeks there and genuinely were blown away by the beauty of not only the islands and the oceans but the people. We felt so comfortable and safe and met some amazing and inspiring people. Its hard not to be happy in the Philippines.

Do you have a city that didn't live up to your expectations and ended up disappointing you?

It wasn’t so much that the city didn’t live up to our expectations and more about the fact we didn’t live up to our own, but in Rome we had a very difficult time. Arriving to Rome on the train we left Jake’s passport under the seat. When then spent our first 4 hours in the city trying to retrieve it with absolutely no luck at all. We couldn’t believe they would just throw it in the bin, but thats what they said. We started off on a frustrating note and it stayed that way with the busy crowds and whistling security guards. We know for a fact that we will experience it differently when we go back, and we cant wait to! Having said all of this, Rome did win us over before we left, the history and architecture is like nothing else.

What's your favourite airport? Why?

Our favourite airport is probably Kuala Lumpur. Mainly because we have spent so much time there and found our secret little hideouts to sleep. It is also a beautiful airport. Its so big and has so much to offer:
An outside Terrace with a flower garden, a free cinema, free massage chairs, a lot of places to sleep and very good food.

What do you keep in your carry on luggage?

Marie
Its not as girly as you would think.
My laptop, Headphones, my phone and a lot of phone and laptop cords and chargers,  always one book (most recent - the subtle Art of not giving a f*ck),
a pillow, sleeping mask and ear plugs, some cosmetics, hairbrush, tiger balm (mosquitos love me - its the only thing that stops me from itching), my little notebook and a comfy sweater.

Jake
My carry-on bag is completely dedicated to camera gear and electronics
Camera, two lens, go pro, laptop, drone, tripod, headphones, filters, bluetooth keyboard

It usually weighs way to much for carry-on but thats our secret, ok? :)

What is the best travel advice you've ever received?

“Do as much of it as you can while you still can” Jake’s Dad

What have you learnt about each other while travelling?

Our relationship feels like it developed at light speed! Thats what travelling the world as a couple does to a relationship. When you travel together you spend every waking hour together, you see each other experience every emotion there is. Our first 8 months together was spent in Asia and then in central and South America, we feel like our relationship had been through what most relationship wont go through in 5 years. It really solidified us as a team, and it taught us everything we needed to know about each other to comfortably take some big risks in regard to our future.

Can you share your favourite memory travelling together?

Doing our free diving course in Mexico was and still is one of the major highlights for us. Not just because we were hanging out and diving in some of the worlds most picturesque and amazing fresh water cenotes. But also because we really pushed ourselves and had to conquer some fears together to pass the course. The course required us to dive to 10m deep on several occasions, before the course Marie had barely even dove underwater at all. It was a real triumph for us to both complete the course and its an experience we will remember forever.
